When RETROSPEC® created the new and improved gear, what makes the new product worthy of being a Plus model? The easy part is knowing that it has to be better than the original; the hard part is knowing how to actually accomplish this. When RETROSPEC® started to design their new do-it-all e-bike, they had to look at every little detail to see what they could improve, and they’re excited to share some of the hard work and considerations that went into creating the Plus-title-worthy Koa Rev+.
RETROSPEC® put a ton of effort into creating an all-terrain e-bike, and their original Koa Rev has been a huge hit among our customers at Los Angeles Electric Bike & Bicycle Shop.
A Good Foundation
Like any good build, it all starts with the foundation, or in this case, the frame. Rather than make small changes, the starting line was a blank canvas. Step 1 was fully integrating the controller and battery for a much cleaner look.
With this in place, the frame geometry was tweaked to improve ride quality and handling while offering an easy, upright position for comfortable cruising and enhanced visibility.
Set the Controls
Power settings, speed, and other information are now easier to read via a new center-mounted color display controlled by a button console on the left. In addition, the throttle is now on the left as well activated by a thumb lever, allowing full control of all electric functions by your left thumb.
The Juice
720Wh of 48V juice is squeezed from LG 21700 Lithium-Ion cells. Refills are handled by a new UL listed 2A charger. This can be done with the battery on or off the bike.
More Whoa
Tektro hydraulic calipers controlled via full-length levers clamp down on 180mm rotors for improved stopping power and greater modulation.
This improved braking capability is further enhanced by E-bike specific rotors that have a 2.3mm thickness (vs the traditional 1.8mm). More material helps manage heat while also reducing vibration-induced screeches.
How Illuminating
Front and rear lighting has been fully integrated into the bike’s electrical system. The lights draw power from the integrated battery and are operated by the button console, for easy on/off. The modern front headlight incorporates an additional reflector and side illumination for greater profile visibility, while the rear offers a brake light function so those behind know when you slow.
Round and Round
These are more than your average fat tires. Beneath the unassuming black rubber exterior is Kenda’s moto casing, which offers greater puncture protection not only on the tread, but on the tires’ sidewalls as well. The fenders have also been extended to offer full-coverage, protecting both you and your bike from all kinds of debris that gets slung up by big tires.
Added up, there are a number of things that have been improved to earn the coveted +. All in order to become invisible, so that all you notice is the joy of the ride.
